Cliff, river and sacred mountain
A long but carefully sequenced day joining Leshan’s river-carved Buddha with the high-altitude temple landscape of Mount Emei.
What you’ll do
- Leave Chengdu early and travel to Leshan, where you can choose the cliff path beside the Buddha or a river cruise for a complete view of the seated figure.
- Continue toward Mount Emei and use the scenic shuttle and cableway system to reach the Golden Summit when weather and operating conditions allow.
- Walk through the summit temple area, look for the meeting point of cloud, mountain and Buddhist architecture, and sample a simple Sichuan snack before the return drive.
Background context
The Leshan Giant Buddha was begun in the eighth century where the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers meet; its builders hoped the sacred image would calm dangerous currents. Mount Emei is one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains and is associated with Samantabhadra. Seeing both in one day connects a monumental act of river engineering and devotion with a living pilgrimage landscape.
