Mount Everest beyond a high-altitude Tibetan valley

Signature China Journeys

From Lhasa to Everest Base Camp

Lhasa · Shigatse · Everest8 daysEst. from $1,860

The high plateau is not a place to rush or treat as scenery alone. This acclimatization-aware route begins with Lhasa’s devotional and everyday rhythms, then moves outward carefully so the landscape, monasteries and highland communities can be understood in relation to one another.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrive slowly in Lhasa

Receive a traditional white hada welcome, then follow the Yarlung Tsangpo and Lhasa River landscapes toward the city. The rest of the day is deliberately light: settle into the hotel, hydrate and let your body begin adjusting to the altitude rather than rushing into a checklist.

Day 2

Monastic life at Drepung and Sera

Visit Drepung Monastery and Loseling College to see how study, ritual and everyday routines share the same spaces. At Sera Monastery, watch the monks’ debate tradition with explanation of the gestures and learning method, keeping the pace gentle as acclimatization continues.

Day 3

Potala, Jokhang and the Barkhor kora

Move from the Potala Palace and nearby Longwangtan Park into Lhasa’s living sacred center at Jokhang Temple. Join the flow of pilgrims on the Barkhor kora, notice the small acts of devotion around you, and finish in a local Tibetan tea house rather than ending the day at a souvenir counter.

Day 4

Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier and Shigatse

Cross Gampala Pass for the first broad view of Yamdrok Lake, then continue beneath Nyenchen Khangsar and share lunch with a local family. Pause at Karola Glacier and the Simila prayer flags before passing through Gyantse on the way to Shigatse.

Day 5

Across the high passes to Everest

Travel over Gyatsola Pass and stop at Gawula Pass for a panorama of the Himalayan range when weather allows. Continue to Rongbuk and Everest Base Camp, where visibility can change quickly; the day stays flexible, and the basic tent accommodation operates only when seasonal conditions permit.

Day 6

Rongbuk and a weather-dependent route west

Begin at Rongbuk Monastery before turning away from Everest. When weather and road conditions permit, continue through Dinggye to the Xilin viewpoint and Sakya Monastery; otherwise return through Gyawula Pass and Tingri, skipping Dinggye and Sakya so the day follows the clearest safe route.

Day 7

Tashilhunpo and the river road to Lhasa

Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, observing the scale of its courtyards and the rhythms of a major living monastery. Return to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo valley, then use any remaining evening for a slow final walk around Barkhor rather than adding another long excursion.

Day 8
